Brief project description
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a disorder that affects muscle tone, movement, and motor skills (the ability to move in a coordinated and purposeful way), and goes along with many other problems such as global delay, visual and hearing problems and epilepsy. It is caused by a lesion of the developing brain and is one of the most common physical disabilities in children. An important aspect of high-quality healthcare is the detailed and systematic recording of epidemiological data over time as they provide crucial information for better understanding the causes of CP, developing best practice guidelines for treatment, monitoring trends in CP as well as raising standards of care for individuals with CP. The BeCPR is a collaboration between the five cerebral palsy reference centres in Belgium, registering such national CP data, making it socio-economically highly relevant. Moreover, it enables Belgium to be included as a partner in the Surveillance of CP in Europe.
